DUFC retain Colours!

On Tuesday, 21 February, DUFC made the trip out to UCD to compete in the annual colours match. Following a period of UCD dominance of the trophy, DUFC won the title back in 2008 by a margin of 4-2. This year's squad went one better than that and took a 5-1 victory winning all of the weapon events except Womens Sabre. Several of Trinity's victories were by large margins including two 5-0 white washes.

With both the men and women starting with the epee events, we got off to a strong start winnning a hard fought 5-3 victory in the mens event with a decidely more straight-forward 5-1 result in the womens event. The second round of matches saw Trinity's only loss of the evening in Women's Sabre but this was more than compensated for by the strong 5-0 triumph in Mens foil. With Trinity 3-1 up overall, in the final two matches of Men's Sabre and Women's Foil Trinity only needed one win to fully secure the trophy for a second year running. As it happened Trinity not only took Women's Foil 5-0 but also overturned last year's loss in Mens Sabre by taking a 5-1 win. Trinity's dominance of the event was underlined by taking both the foil matches without conceding a bout in either.

This victory means that in 2009 DUFC teams have won the Intervarsities, the Colours and the Trinity Cup. Our thanks go to UCD for hosting this year's match and we look forward to trying to make it three-in-a-row in Trinity next year.

Prof. Duffy Memorial Team Epee, Trinity, 24/25 January, 2009

The mens winners were Tiromachino from Italy who dominated all their matches and were too strong for Edinburgh in the final. The women's event saw Leipzig retain the trophy coming ahead of Team International. DUFC's first epee team suffered the ignominy of losing out in the L16 to our foilists masquerading as epeeists for the day.

Congratulations to Pembroke on thier brilliant weekend in which they won both the men's and women's events.

Competitions 15 and 16 November 2008
The weekend of the 15 and 16 November saw two competitions with Trinity fencers take place; our novices made the trek to Cork for the annual Schull Novice competition where our stand-out result was Eleanor Friel's third place in the woman's event. Congrats to all those who competed. The experience they gained should be a boon to Trinity in coming competitions.

The Other event in which Trinity fencers were involved in this busy weekend was the Welsh Open in Cardiff, an Irish ranking event for the first time. Three of our fencers made crossed to Wales for the hugley competitive event with Colm Flynn coming 69th in the mens epee and Maria Treacy and Kate Harvey achieving 45th and 57th places respectively in the womens foil.

Vinnie Duffy Sabre, DKIT, August 2008
Following a training day on Saturday September 13th Dundalk IT hosted the Vinnie Duffy Sabre competition on Sunday 14th. Two of Trinity's sabreurs made the trek north along the coast to record finishes of 8th (Ali Mahdavirad) and 10th (Rodrigo Gonzalez).

South of Ireland Open, UCC, August 2008

The South of Ireland Open took place on the weekend of the 23rd and 24th August in UCC's Mardyke Arena. A mixture of novice and experienced Trinity fencers made the trip for a hugely enjoyable weekend in Cork.

Trinity's outstanding result of the weekend was Women's Foil National Champion Maria Treacy's 2nd place finish in the Women's Foil. She had met fellow Trinity fencer Kate Harvey in the semi finals; a nail biting match resulted in the closest possible result, a 15-14 finish. Maria went on to be defeated by Sonja Waloszek in the final while Kate went on to record another third place finish on the second day of competition, this time in the epee.

There was another intra-club clash in the last 16 of the Men's Foil where Donal Mulligan overcame Declan Gibbons in a highly competitive match and went on to record a 7th place finish.

The full list of DUFC results from the competition are as follows:

Mens Epee:
11. Colm Flynn
15. James Stratford

Mens Foil:
7. Donal Mulligan
10. Declan Gibbons
22. Gabriel Beecham

Mens Sabre:
6. Rodrigo Gonzalez

Womens Foil:
2. Maria Treacy
3. Kate Harvey

Womens Epee:
3. Kate Harvey

Well done to all our fencers involved in the weekend's action.

UCD Novice Championship, 2008

UCD's inaugural 6 weapon novice competition saw only one Trinity entrant; Gabriel Beecham however entered all three men's events recording his best result in the epee where he finished 7th. Alongside that result he came 12th and 16th in the foil and sabre events respectively.

Dublin Epee, UCD, 2008

In the height of what passes for an Irish the summer, two Trinity epeeists travelled to deepest darkest UCD to for the Dublin Open Epee. After fighting through two sets of poules both competitors finished in the medal positions; Hannah Lowry O'Reilly impressed with her best result to date by finishing second it the women's event, unluckily being beaten in the final by Lorraine McGill by only one point in a 14-15 final score. Hannah's result is all the more notable given that she has been fencing less than a year having only begun fencing at the start of the 2007/08 season. Elsewhere, Colm Flynn reached the semi-finals in the men's event before losing to UCC's Michalis Kirimilidis.
